Top 5 Must-Haves for Braces-Friendly Smiles

Congratulations on your new braces! Having braces unlocks a journey towards a straighter, more confident smile. But let’s be honest, keeping those brackets and wires sparkling clean can feel like a whole new adventure. Here at Poppies Dental Care, we want to equip you with the right tools to navigate this journey with ease. So, dive into our top 5 must-haves for braces-friendly smiles!

1. Soft Touch: Your New Best Friend

Say goodbye to your old, hard-bristled brush! Brackets and wires demand a softer touch. Invest in a toothbrush with soft, rounded bristles. These bristles will gently clean around your orthodontics without causing irritation or damaging delicate wires. Remember, brushing for two minutes, twice a day is still the golden rule!

2. Reach Hidden Nooks & Crannies: Interdental Brushes to the Rescue!

Food particles love to hide between brackets and wires, creating a breeding ground for bacteria. This is where interdental brushes come in as your secret weapon. These tiny brushes, shaped like bottle cleaners, help you reach those hard-to-reach areas and banish pesky plaque. Ask your dentist or hygienist for the size and type best suited for your specific needs.

3. Fluoride: Your Cavity-Fighting Champion

Brushing may be your shield, but fluoride toothpaste is your armour against cavities. Look for a toothpaste with fluoride specifically formulated for people with braces. These formulations often contain additional ingredients to soothe gums and fight plaque buildup around brackets. Bonus points for choosing a fun flavour to keep brushing exciting!

4. Soothing Relief: Orthodontic Wax – Your Bracket Buddy

Let’s face it, sometimes brackets can rub against your cheeks or tongue, causing discomfort. This is where orthodontic wax becomes your knight in shining armour. This soft, mouldable wax creates a protective barrier on your brackets, preventing irritation and keeping your smile comfortable. Keep a small packet of wax handy to tackle unexpected bracket blues.

5. Fresh Breath, Happy Smile: Don’t Forget the Mouthwash!

Food particles trapped around brackets can lead to lingering bad breath. Combat this by incorporating a fluoride mouthwash into your routine. Choose a mild, alcohol-free formula that helps remove food debris, fights bacteria, and leaves your breath feeling fresh and minty. Bonus tip: ask your dentist about mouthwashes specific for orthodontic care.

Remember: These are just our top 5 picks! Every smile is unique, so your dentist or hygienist can personalise your dental hygiene routine based on your specific needs. Schedule regular checkups for expert guidance and professional cleanings to ensure your braces journey is a smooth and healthy one!

As an elderly lady with severe breathing problems and a pathological fear of dentists, I feared the worst when I needed to receive treatment. All my fears have been dissipated, the treatment I received (involving drill work) was painless, speedy and stress-free. My comfort was a major consideration at all times. I have many health issues (including deafness) and all attention was paid to factoring in these setbacks. The dentist was infinitely reassuring throughout and executed my drilling and filling with speed and efficacy. The nurses also could not have been more comforting and efficient. I can only say that such exemplary treatment has allayed my deep-seated fear of dental work. I can reiterate that I would recommend Poppies Dental to any and everybody, especially those with a phobia of dentists. Top marks to all involved.
